There is a pair in your closet you have not worn in months. Nothing is wrong with them. The laces are fine, the tread is fine, and you would still call them good shoes. But the white went soft and grey around the bottom, and now you reach past them every time. You never decided to retire them. You just stopped.

The usual fix makes it worse. A damp cloth looks like it is working while the midsole is wet, then dries back to the same colour. A midsole is not smooth. The dirt is down in the texture. The cloth lifts the loose layer off the top and pushes the rest sideways into the low spots, so the grey stops being patchy and starts being even. Even grey reads as clean for about a day.

A brush and a solution work the other way. The solution loosens the dirt so it stops holding on, and the bristles reach into the texture the cloth was skating over. The grey comes up and out instead of moving around under your hand, and it leaves with the cloth.

The conditioner is the half people never use, because it is not the part that takes the grey out. Cleaning and finishing are two jobs, and doing only the first is why a shoe comes out clean and still looks tired.

Here is what it does not do. It moves dirt, and dirt is not the only thing that turns a shoe grey. If the midsole has yellowed or the upper is creased through, you are looking at wear rather than soil, and no cleaner takes that back out. This is for a shoe that is dirty, not a shoe that is finished.

Two practical notes. Do both shoes in one sitting, because a finished left beside an untouched right shows you how far they had gone. And this is hand work. Set aside real time and a surface you do not mind getting wet.

The result is not a new shoe. It is a shoe that goes back in the rotation instead of living at the back of the rack.
