You sweep the pile up, and half of it is still in the broom.

Pet hair does not fall off bristles the way dust does. It wraps around them. So every stroke after the first one is really you moving the same fur back and forth across the kitchen, and the job ends with you crouched on the floor pulling clumps out of the broom head with your fingers.

What you do now is bang the broom against the rim of the trash can. That gets dust off. It does nothing to hair, because wrapped hair is looped around the bristle rather than resting on it, and impact does not undo a loop. So you go back to picking it off by hand, which is the step that makes you put the broom away dirty.

The lip of this dustpan has teeth cut into it. You drag the broom backwards through them and they comb the bristles clean, and what comes off drops into the pan instead of back onto the floor. That is the entire idea, and it removes the worst step of sweeping up after an animal.

It is sold as a set, and that is the part worth thinking about before you order. The teeth are on the pan, so they only help you on the days the pan is standing where the broom is. A dustpan that lives somewhere else is a dustpan you stop using, and then you own a normal broom.

The teeth reach what a comb reaches, which is the outer face of the head. Hair worked down into the middle of the bristles over months still comes out with fingers. And this fixes the cleanup, not the sweeping. If your complaint is fine dust skating away from the bristles instead of hair clinging to them, buy a flat microfiber dust mop.

It is a hard-floor tool. On carpet a broom is the wrong instrument no matter whose teeth are on the dustpan.
